Kevin Pietersen has been ruled out of the final Test against New Zealand at Eden Park and is also set to miss the IPL as he is set to miss eight weeks with a knee injury.
The 32-year-old has played through pain in his right knee since the warm-up match in Queenstown before the current Test series, which is tied at 0-0 after two drawn matches.
Pietersen will now return to London for "further investigations and specialist review" on "possible cartilage damage" although the ECB did not say whether he would undergo an operation.
"Recent scans confirm an injury to the right knee with bone bruising and possible cartilage damage to the kneecap.
He was due to take up his contract with the Delhi Daredevils on April 4 and would have played around five weeks in the IPL worth up to £1 million.
But now Pietersen faces surgery and will miss the entire IPL season.
